So my brother and I are playing on our private server, and I needed him to go out in search of materials. He comes across a pirate base when suddenly he just spontaneously dies (Absolutely NO ship damage, shields on) and text appears on the screen saying a pirate turret had killed him. So I make a small ship to retrieve his, and wouldn't you know, I spontaneously die aswell. I have no idea how it would have happened, maybe you guys have some answers.

Luckily he saved his monster of a ship in the catalog, no worries. :)

Can you post the server-database folder and say which sector and update this happened on? Because I WANT to see what did that.

Well, pirates, trading guild and turrets shoot 100% accurately now, and will drill right through shields and armour and straight down to the ship core.

He said no damage was done. and im sure that noone puts their cores on the exteriors of their ships. that is unless they want a easyier to destroy ship.

With the laser beam accuracy that AI and turrets have now, most of the time when you die there is only a 1-2 block-wide hole that goes straight to the core.

He also said he was on his buddy\'s private server, he could be using his own computer to host it rather than a dedicated server, which could unravel this mystery and chalk it up to lag. Sometimes I host a server on my own computer and my friends play, and every time they have died their shields have still been up, they just seem to spontaneously die.

Also, there is another issue found here: http://star-made.org/content/server0overlappingbox-causing-extreme-lag-and-local-fps-drops

That could also be causing lag as well, which would explain why it would also happen to the host when otherwise the host should have no lag.
