questions about the API

so eum, i only know that API is a sort of key to for modding.

i'd like to know more about it, like what it exualy does and enables.
and why it takes so much time (know that i don't know much about API, so just why does it take so much time without regards to any other game that makes an API)
i don't even know for sure if this API exualy takes much time if you look at other game producers.
any information that i can understand is nice to know.

API: Application Programming Interface
An API allows other programs(in the case of modding-APIs mods) to interact with a program(in this case StarMade).
Making an API in and of itself isn't hard and timeconsuming, but making a good API, that can easily be understood and used is hard and time-consuming.
In addition, since StarMade is still in alpha, the API has a low priority, as any system may be drastically changed and overhauled.
