When mining to a planet's core it seems to cause a lot of lag. I do not know if there is a way to fix it. But I feel like a if there were an option to toggle the visual effects on the core it might help, at least graphically.

Having beams on is what causes a lot of that lag. The planet core is no different really than any other animated block. Turn off beams in your options and see if that helps. The grid effect that happens when removing blocks may also cause lag.
