Newbie unable to join multiplayer

Hi.. I'm new to the game and cant seem to join multi player servers? I just seem to be waiting forever. What am I doing wrong?

at what point are you having to wait, at starmade linkup, during server connection, at the load screen?

It's at the point where the window reads:

Starmade Connector
Requesting Synchronise

I'm also using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS if that matters?

That shouldn't matter.
However, when waiting at "Requesting Synchronize", how much data comes streaming in and out through your connection? If it is more than the "idle"(no program using any connection is running) traffic, but near the maximum capacity of your connection, the server seems to have to send a lot of overhead data.
Otherwise, are you using a wireless connection? Wireless connections tend to cause random disconnects and timeouts with StarMade, especially if reception is bad/low.
