The current crafting system... is pointless. It doesn't really have a strong purpose. You can argue that it's for not having to buy your items and just building them instead, while you are right, it doesn't give you as much when you build with those resources as you do if you where to sell them and buy the same thing you were planning to craft. You can't profit from crafting either. If you convert things into other things, like ores into capsules it'll just give you 10 that are worth 12 each, Ore cost 120. 12x10=120. that is not a difference. There is no reason to try and craft to get more money, and the resources needed to make things are too expensive for 1 object to be practical for major gathering and crafting operations to be more useful and convenient as buying from a store. The only way for you to get enough resources to craft in large amounts you either need to claim a sector or have a ridiculously huge salvager ship. It's probably why the trade guild takes so long to restock their shops. The crafting system should be overhauled to be both more profitable when crafting than just selling raw ore and more practical to craft than to buy from shops.
It can make people way more likely to make their own shops to get tons of money. A person could make a shop with tons of resources like a certain hull and get rich, while people can also sell tons of a resource there that the person that own it can use to make more. Having your own shop wouldn't be a waste of time. At least, as much of a waste of time.
It might even led people to be more of an empire of trade than a empire of military. Giving the game some more variety in faction types. A person with a trade empire could even make their own ship building company to have people build ships for other people for money or resources.
As all this all explains a rehauled crafting system could led to many great things. I just hope for this to be taken into consideration.
