One thing I would like to see in the future are nested fleets.
Specifically, I'd like to be able to designate specific squadrons underneath my main carrier and be able to order the squadrons around independently.
Specific examples?
Fighter escort squadrons that go after the same target, and strike squadrons that go on the offensive.
For escort squadrons, I'd like to be able to assign say three fighters to a squadron, and then set the squadron to escort mode. These three fighters now fly and fight in formation, ganging up on whatever the squadron leader deems the main target to be.
Similar for strike squadrons, I'd like to be able to designate a heavier ship like a light cruiser to be the squadron leader, give it 4-6 fighters, and be able to command those squadrons to focus on specific targets. That way I could have part of my fleet free to go chase enemies down, while another part of the fleet remains close to my carrier at all times.
Would be nice to have a hotbar for squadron commands as well. Having buttons to press to say "Attack Focus" to set their AI to attack whatever is currently in focus, then change focus to something else and give the attack command to a second squadron.
Hmmm... big problem would be that changing focus from the carrier would be difficult, as it's likely going to be a titan and not very maneuverable. Perhaps the flagship designation could be a block instead of a flat out ship assignment? That way you could put the flagship block on a turret and a second player could sit in the turret to be able to quickly spin around and focus on things to assign squadron targets?
