So, do you have the JDK installed and this is an error, or do you only have the JRE? If you never manually installed Java, you probably have the JRE. Install the JDK then.

Thanks for your reply, der_scheme. I have never manually added java on this OS installation; it's brand new.

Do I need a JDK from java 6, 7, or 8 (8 just came out)??? My mac is running OSX 10.9 "Mavericks", so whatever i choose also has to work in a 64-bit environment. i'm also playing Minecraft, which is only compatible with Java6, which is also pretty old. How do i install more than one number-revision of java and have both of them available for use? Thanks.

Minecraft does also work with Java 7. (At least it does on Windows and with OpenJDK 7 on Linux.)
Since it's reached EOL over a year ago, you shouldn't use Java 6. Personally, I'd probably install Java 7. Java 8 could still have some bugs and you still have time until 2015 for your upgrade from 7.
