While in space, Technically there is no up and down. Howerver, in many space themed Sci Fi shows and movies, to quote some, Star Trek, Starwars, Stargate, and almost any other scifi you can think of involving space ships, All the ships, reguardless of faction or race, is usualy oriented the same, up and down being the common factor. You just don't see ships flying sideways and upside down in relation to other ships. Futher, when a player in Starmade presses C while in flight mode on a ship, the ship will return to default orientation, level witht he player when he/she exits a ship. But when flying, there is no way to really know just how your ship is oriented in relation to the rest of the universe. Only way you can be sure of proper orientation is by pressing C, and that even changes your ship's direction.
To counter this, and ease navigation, especially when flying in groups, it would be nice, to have a change to the hud, that will display your ship's course and headding, bearing, roll, pitch, and yaw. when flying in a group, and you wish to direct your group somwhere, it would be nice and easy for all to say, head to that planet at 381 mark 496 rather than, "That purple one by the star." It would ease navigation and make flight in a ship easier.
