Having Trouble Starting the Game

I recently downladed StarMade, and on my attempt to play it, I first went for single-player sandbox mode. However, when the server finished setting itself up, I found myself at a roadblock. I was spinning through space in what I assume was just the backdrop for a title screen, with nothing but a spawn box with the options "spawn" and "exit" (neither of which are responsive to any clicking or button-pressing that I could find). The only thing I could interact with was a small "help" text on the left side of the screen, which amounted to nothing more than toggling that single word with the F1 key. I'm probably just doing something incredibly stupid, but I can't figure out how to actually start the game. Please help!
