If you have a flag ship that carries the faction block, all ships in the faction should be linked so that if one comes under attack, a mayday is sent and the status is known by every member of that faction in real time. It could include coords and type of attack. This would enhance the faction defense game play. Think a swarm of bees coming to either rescue or counter if possible. Be it enemy or pirates.
