What it would do
These "comets" would form randomly once in a while in the universe, already going at a random set speed and not stopping (Because there's no friction in space.) The particals of the comet would be facing away from the sun, hurling at anything in its path, not stopping for anything. (Besides a huge rock, planet, or a big enough ship/station) If its near enough a planet, it will be catched in the field of gravity and crash into it.
This will cause water to form if its not a ice planet, If it's a ice planet the water will just turn into ice, if its a lava planet, it will just melt, obviously. 100% of the time a crater will form, 50% of the time there would be some icy ore and rock.
If you're actually lucky enough to land on one of these comets, they actually have a gravity field of their own. You can mine a bunch of icy ore and rock here, whatever size the comet is, of course.
Now, the point for these comets would be...
What would the ore be?
Most of it would be icy rock, icy ore, and pretty much anything icy. Now, what would the icy ore be used for? Well, if you gather enough of it you can manufacture it into Icy Hull, this hull would be pretty light, considering its made out of ice with a few pieces of metal thrown in the bunch. It is manly used for fast and nimble ships.
You wouldn't be able to find much of the icy Hull in stores, and if you do there probably wont be much of it. The icy Hull wouldn't melt, obviously, or you'd just be melting from the sun!.
Other stuff
Some other things though, you would have to implement gravity around planets, to be able to orbit them and get catched by them.
This would be very cool to see in the game, giving more of a dynamic and the universe is always changing feel.
I'm not sure if this is possible or not with the engine the game is on, but it cant hurt to ask! Feel free to give me your opinion on this idea!

Now, the point for these comets would be...
- Another danger to avoid in space
- New ore
- Looks cool.
