Cant overheat pirateship core

I have sat shooting the core for 20 minutes and it hasn't overheated yet.

Im probably missing something but I cant find anything on overheating cores

You cannot overheat cores by shooting only at them. You need to destroy 45% of the structure HP to disable the ship and 50% of the HP to overheat a ship.

OK thanks last time I played was when you just had to shoot the core

Would be nice though if shooting the core caused some damage to the rest of the ship somehow.
