Building Good Looking Ships

I've been working at relearning the game and getting the basics and practicality down (using a downloaded USS Defiant) and now need to get the battleship, planet destroyer, etc. look down, but I just can't do it. If anyone has any tips on building good looking ships, please provide them. Thank you.

The major mistakes that people make with aesthetics is having the surfave too crowded (Vent, vent, spike, blue thingy, logo, vent, vent, vent) and not adding details at all. Look at other ships and be inspired by them (Or rip them off) and look at concept art.
