Hey,
Found this video of Blockade Runner's proposed destruction mechanism:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=JoKNkAoLExA
Basically what it does is, when a block takes damage it 'breaks' into a slope block or corner block angled towards the focus of impact of the weapon. Blocks closer to the 'epicenter' take more damage and are destroyed entirely. Further, the newly-exposed sides of the blocks are slapped with a texture of basic burnt material and arcing electricity (after glowing orange/red, of course), enhanced by floating debris sprites that radiate from the explosion.
And on the topic of beam weapons, so far we've got a lot of rapid fire and missile weapons - a beam weapon that requires significant resources or something would be pretty cool. The special effects of the weapons are also a bit lacking, but to be fair it is in Alpha. I'd love to see a weapon whose energy appears to 'collect' at its muzzle before deploying in a speedy shot.
Machine guns for point defense/small craft would be pretty neat too.
