ok so I may not have a big or necessarily a good idea about how the assignment of crew quarters could be handled.
my idea is that a system similar to copy paste is used to designate a certain area as something. for example you could have a 5x5x5 room that you want as a engine room, you could select a type of room from a drop down list and click a button called place room set the build size to 5x5x5, then said room will be allocated as a node for ai.
the reason I suggest the idea for a copy paste or adv build mode feature for setting rooms is because a lot of people include a lot of detail in their corridors, and don't want to waste more space or ruin the look by having to place down multiple different blocks (like has been suggested in other places. this might be a good idea for crew stations, such as a command station, feel free to discuss) so this will allow for corridors/rooms/bunks/bridges to be designated by a simple area system.
