Am I missing something about transporters?

I have two test transporters. Each consists of a single computer and it's linked module. They are located about 100 meters from each other on my faction homebase. I select the destination, click activate, and every time I am placed right outside of the bounding box of my station.

Am I doing something wrong?

If this is a multiplayer server, would it be possible for me to join and observe the behavior?

I've had this happen to me once before as well.

Using two transporters to move from the top to the bottom of my station instead of my older rail car elevators. Most of the time they have worked fine. Once though it teleported me about 300 meters out into space above my station, right about where the bounding box would be due to the shipyard off to the side.

So, supporting evidence that this does happen, but not reproducible on demand.
