This has probably been suggested before but anyway.
In flight mode the game should be able to function like an aeroplane/fighter thus roll left,roll right, tilt up,tilt down, throttle up, throttle down at the moment the game is missing tilt!!!
Strafing in all directions would make sense if you have engines pointing in all directions...
Now that in turn would make sense if you could place a cockpit on each side that can observe in each direction (it is pointing in) so you could see in the direction you are going. Imagine a borg cube that does not need to turn..you strafe in any direction and just change the point of view. there you want to look.
I think both ways of operating a ship should be possible, at the moment it is a hybrid that is not so good..
