Not quite sure if there's any sort of trigger to it, but often when I look in my inventory the text popup showing the name of an item gets stuck so it displays one particular object name over whatever you're actually looking at. When it's glitched out like this it also prevents you from dropping things from inventory and acts like you're trying to sell it even though you aren't near a shop.
Also, I've noticed you cannot sell things directly from a plex container at a shop, you must transfer it to inventory first. (although I'm not sure if this is a bug or working as intended.) At any rate it says something like "cannot sell 0 items!" or something of that sort when you try.
