For smaller ships I would suggest using slabs if you don't want to use 45° slopes. Slabs are helpful for small ships as it doesn't mean adding a whole block just to add a small cover to the top of a barrel or such.

This shield update should help with the benefits of flanking and attacking from surprising angles. As most instincts would put heavy shielding in the front while weaker shielding in the back. This helps compared to the entity wide shield system we currently have, as being attacked from any angle...

And seeing how crew doesn't seem particularly high on the priority list, with the power, sheild, and universe updates taking priority, I doubt crew would be touched on much, until maybe a boarding update is made feasible. But for now we have what we have, and we can make the most of it, and let...

I'd recommend ignoring crew members. They're seemingly an incomplete feature, and not worth the hassle in my opinion. Maybe in the future they'll work on it, but it doesn't look like it.
