As the game stands now, it's probably wiser to fly the biggest thing you can as long as it isn't crappy or not large enough to be competitive, regardless of whether or not you can afford a replacement at the time... Unlike in EvE or some other game the likelihood of losing a ship is in almost...
Losing is expensive; winning isn't... If fleets of large ships are better than a single even larger ship, that'd be probably the optimal thing to use... until you run into somebody's massive drone swarm :|
By "Old Launcher" do you mean the old patching window, or the Connection Manager? Because the Connection Manager has not yet been replaced. It will eventually be eliminated in favour of an ingame main menu, but at the moment that window will remain. The new launcher only replaces the old...
I probably won't be purchasing a subscription until this summer, if even then; any time before that would be a waste. But I'd be glad for a bit of help when I get back there.
Managing ship movements like this might be good, but I'm kind of divided on this. All SM really needs is the ability to command your AI ships to follow you, follow something else, or attack something... But then, a full-on capital ship command mode that lets you dictate directions and maneuvers...
As I've said before, I personally wouldn't mind if orbital bombardments weren't possible in the first place, but it wouldn't be hard to use the same mapping system that is used to determine relative position of ships, to calculate where a projectile would land. There are other issues with this...

Wat? I've been checking the dev builds every day at files.star-made.org/build/dev and there is no new build out yet since last release cycle... How the heck are there fancy AI options? Have the builds moved? Was the launcher passing arguments (or not passing arguments) to the game that activate...
Yeah, with LOD and saving optimization (store a seed for unloaded chunks or plates!) planets like that could be alright. Exactly twice that size seems optimal.
