That was my logic. I shaved off as much extra weight as I could because I knew that the ship would be way over the limit.

My ship is already finished. It's a refitted version of the DFN Rockhopper, with a full interior and some systems like the jump drive left out to keep it below the mass limit for the contest.

You guys are having that problem too? Even my smallest salvager does that, and to a lesser extent the wafflebeam cannons on about half my warships.
