I think I may have solved it, had 2 pirate encounters so far so good. I had OpenAL turned off due to looping sounds so, followed the directions after clicking "sound problems?" and it seems to have worked.
I'm getting the same behaviour, just created a thread about it. I thought it was because I was near a pirate station but, this makes more sense.

Whilst playing single player I'm having problems with the game lagging down to 1fps if I go near enough to a pirate station for them to start firing at me. I don't experience this anywhere else, planets and large ships are fine. Has anyone else experienced this behaviour?
