Ships that small are usually relatively under-powered. If you're fighting other small craft, I recommend guided missiles for PVE and beams for PVP. Forward facing turrets with their AI set to "selected target" can auto-aim for you; making the fight easier. Just make sure you give them an "off" switch via logic or you might shoot friendlies.
