How do I turn shaders off, are they in the options?

Anyone care to explain the crazy frame drops I've been getting. It wasn't like this a few updates ago but I'm starting to think that it's the shader update that is really causing this. I can only place around 2-5 blocks before I drop to 1 fps and I have to wait 5 secs before my fps recovers...

I think the server has been down since late yesterday? It did come on for a brief period of time but it\'s down right now. It would be nice if someone would give us the lowdown of what is happening right now.
