I think that it is interesting how boarding is not taken into account in this thread. Boarding the enemy ship is/should be a valid option. If we had NPC crew, since players and ships arent affected by shields, having a small boarding vessel would in theory discourage large sheild-boating...

Why do you say that the NPCs having a tough time getting around is a bad thing? Seems to me that it would encourage people to build ACTUAL hallways, like you would have in a real ship. Also, since the NPCs would not be as good as a real crew, it would encourage you to get players for your crew...
