Hello and weclome to my mini-faction but now turned shipyard/build-style, the
    =Solar Trade Confederacy=
(originated with a group of friends on old EE, they all gradually lost interest besides me)

The STC shipyards and research bases will always be found in a binary star system with a blue and yellow/white/red star. They will be next to, around, or on a sizable ice planet of over 300 radius. And the system will also have a baller skybox. This usually severely constrains where I set up. >_>

Introducing the biggest project that I have procrastinated on so far, the SoaSE TEC Kol Battleship. I have downsized it and have been taking an artistic licence to it, and it may only vaguely resemble it in the end with the 4 pronged lances in the front and the characteristic wedge and "assault rifle" shape of the overall body.
(although that seems to be disappearing as I keep adding more and more layers to the rear, turning it from the stock to the back of a space ship)

    Detroit Class Cruiser

Rough size dimensions is about 350 by 85 by 85 right now, not including the spiky spear tips in the front.

The goal of this project is to create a damage sponge of a cruiser that is losely based on the Kol Battleship from Sins of a Solar Empire. Not to create a Kol Battleship for the game starmade.

    ++Un-edited Old Post Below++

    What I did:
Downloaded a Kol Battleship template in Google Sketch-up, hacked away at it for a solid day, then exported it as a .obj file, used [cmd] to run [binvox -d 400 -ri Kol.obj] and viewvox to check it out, then imported the .binvox to SMEdit, changed the location of the Core, couldn't do anything else due to immense lag with the program, so I saved it as a blueprint. Been chugging away at it for the past day now. Took a lot of inspiration from THIS ship's command section, and I wanted to do a heavy industrial/submarine feel with pipes and girders and recessed lighting everywhere.

Eventually, over the course of the build, I will be replacing/moving nearly every one of those standard grey hulls as I Smooth, flatten, resize, and rebuild portions of the ship. And this is after I hacked it apart in Google Sketchup (mainly the ventral and the port side).

Might skimp a bit on the logic side, as I want to keep my frames as high as possible when with this thing, if it is to become my primary ship.

As you can see, I have a ways to go, but I think that the command 'bunker' was the hardest/most time consuming room to make, as that also would have the effect of determining the style of the rest of the ship. I REALLY like how the shields and power blocks flash behind the girders, makes the ship seem like it has systems that are alive! :)

Will update original post as progress progresses.

    ++End of Old Post++

    [insert new material here]
(or procrastinate and don't do that... whatever... need more determination)

I set the length to be 400 blocks long using binvox, hence the constricting dimentions command of -d 400. I can make it any size, if you want a larger or smaller hull for yourself, ask and I will PM you a link.

EDIT: More pictures to better show the scale/shape of the ship! I think this might take me all month!

Trying my hand at this cool technique that I saw on other builds. How does it look/what should I do to improve it? I was thinking about swapping the ice crystal for lava. How should I go about improving it? Just placed the light blocks randomly, but I might need less light and more darkness.

Now, onto the next bit of interior:

I was thinking about "turbolifts" but I though that good old stairs were uncommon and decided to add some in.

The yellow circuits create mood lighting! They need to be placed with a space between them and the girders, or else the circuits become invisible. Need to think about what to do with the walls and ceiling.

Added in the base of other floors and the rest of the stairs! Now I need to fill the floors with rooms.

How do they look? How should I improve them? What kind of rooms does a ship need?
    Was thinking:
    -General Stores
    -Crew Quarters
    -Officers Quarters
    -Galley/Mess hall
    -Rec/workout room
    What else?

A ship of that size is more like a small town or a company. As such, it will have a lot of infrastructure to support it.
Here's a list of things you need/can put on your Starship:
    Escape pods/panic rooms/emergency areas
    Medbay
War room or very austere, august meeting room for high ranking officers and diplomats
Digital library and archival access room (gotta keep those battle plans somewhere!)
Along with the above, a massive server room that handles the distributed computing tasks of the ship
Common Rooms near and in the Crew and Officer Quarters
Greenhouse/Farmspace for fresh food and possibly oxygen
Offices and Centers for payroll/recruitment/Logistics/Communications/Software maintenance/Diplomatic Corps?/Engineering and Facilities

    Also, yellow lights look better.

Alright, Swapped it all out for yellow lighting, have yet to do the rest of this structure here. Changed up the middle tube, made both ends into airlocks, and did the same with the middle, in-case of a breach, only half of the tube is compromised. Hopefully.

I like the idea of a war room, and I will try to set up a holographic generic star system :)
It should be fun to make!

I already have plans for a big server room with data stacks and whatnot. I am thinking of blue lighting for that.
Already have plans for a crew commons area. The question now is: how big is the crew size going to be, had how many rooms for 4 do I need to make?

Maybe it's time to gives us a stat rundown? I can do some quick calculus and see what your crew size would be.

    Alright, I need your help:

    Yellow or Orange?

I tried lava, but it didn't look right :/ Maybe I need to redo the travel tube below it, but that would be a serious pain! :(
Or maybe I should do a different color for these windows altogether?

(I guess I could make it into a greenhouse thing, but there isnt really any vegetable looking plant yet, is their?)
    Orange, definetly!

Stats rundown eh? Umm, well, you see....

Its mainly hollow, but stands 100 meters tall, 370 meters long if you chop off the beam cannons on the front, and probably around 60 meters wide if you remove the hanger.

Lots of empty space now, but when I am done with it, the only hollow spaces will be the rooms in the front. I hope to get 3-5 layers of armor, with every nook and cranny stuffed with shield or energy capacitors!

Well, this song is amazing! Thought I was listening to a Sin's Soundtrack playist, but Noooooo. Favoriting this now while I work! All the songs on this list seem really good!!! :O
    youtube link
Listening to these while I work really gets me excited to finish this thing. Or, at least the section that I am working on.
Spoiler, here is a glimse of the BEAM CANNONS! BZZZZZZZT!

Got the rest of them done now, detaling up the front and whatnot, going to do some more work before I update

Decided that these disks that stick out will be a fire control room for the "BEAM CANNONS!". Now I just need to hook up logic some how to the Blast Doors so they can close during incoming fire. Ironically, I think the windows actually have more armor than the ceiling or floor.
Better find out how logic can affect doors. Hopefully its just "c" and "v" linkage. That's easy :)

Its coming along! Slowed way down when I realized that the work I did on one side had not mirrored to the other side properly, and had to turn off symmetry and fix that. The model I have has holes punched into the white tip, any suggestions on how to get 2x2 holes on an angled surface and still look good? I'll experiment after I sleep on it. The soundtrack I have been listening too has been 90% awesome, some songs were too slow for me and I skipped, but most are good. :)

    +++

Finished the front underside, now time to work on the front top. I am starting to not like the hazard decal, and I think I will remove it and put much smaller decal their. Yeah... looking at it now after standing back... it looks BAD...
But I think the smoothing came out good! Now to work on the asymmetrical top that was supposed to be symmetrical. :I
Actually I think I will save that for tomorrow.

Unsure of what to clean next, after the front top. Probably that bulge at the bottom with the windows, make it into a... I dunno what yet XD

Any Ideas? Thinking of having a maintenance hanger underneath it, primary for cargo ships cause that's where the cargo bay will be.

This is what it looks like in Sketchup:

Oh yeah, I have this spawned in the EE server, but I am working on a smaller vessel first, then I will finish this.

    I need more advice:
A, B, C, or D? (assuming in order of pictures presented in the album)

    And now,
This is what I am working with, I am taking this:

And then enhancing the size and increasing it like so:

Now, I need to break up that surface because I don't want 2 continuous strips of thruster bars.
Hence the question to people, what do you guys like more?
Narrow or wide, and what way should it be slanted? Parallel or perpendicular?
I still have yet to decide about the space in-between the engine clusters, but I have some ideas that I will choose from.

Also, looking at that middle picture, spaced armor would be bad-ass I think! :D
How to implement it and how thick to make it is beyond me, but I feel like that pre-production image looks really cool before I covered it up. (yes, internal armor bulkheads FTW!)

    +++++

Now I know I haven't updated/posted here in a long while, but with the creation of a mid-sized turret like this guy:

And some dockable hardware like this guy:

Who was designed to fit in turret wells of ships using USD style plugs led me to rejuvenate this project (at the cost of the algos, linebacker, yellow ship, commerce raider, and nearly the Washtenaw all being shelved for now. Okay, I should probably face facts, I was likely to only ever finish the Algos anyways :/) and spend most of my limited starmade time placing blocks.

Being a turret boat with universal standard docks in the turret wells, I can stick different pieces of equipment in depending on what sort of enemy and tactics they are using. More power, more shield recharge, drones, chaff, inhibitors, missile turrets, cannon-cannon turrets, anti-shield turrets, anti-hull turrets, snipers, machine guns, you name it. I... just need to build it...
...Oh my god this will never be finished.

Thanks for all the responses :P

This is what I have got so far. Still very rough, but the front half is starting to come together (right now. over me) (i'm sorry)

Oh yeah don't I know it, was thinking about adding a WW2 looking superstructure like you see with battleships and cruisers but for now I am taking things one step at a time.

So haven't been working on much, then I heard about this new competition!
