    Okay guys, I know things are changing, and change is scary, but we really should embrace it.

    Sure, having more discrete reactors is going to mean a change in the way ships are built. They're now going to have a centralized area that can be targeted and destroyed, and its probably going to be a bit bulkier than what some of us are used to, despite using less blocks overall.

    But that doesn't mean its the end of the world, or that creativity is gone because everybody is going to have to use the same building block. It just means things will change and look a little different. Its not the first time we've gone through this, it won't be the last.

    Cores used to be weak spots on ships, if you could drill down and destroy the core, you'd win with 99% of the rest of the ship still being intact, so ships were designed with the core deep in the center. People scoffed at other people building Star Trek ships with the core on the bridge where it was more vulnerable. Then core drilling stopped being a thing, and builds changed.

    Go back further, and thrusters used to work like power generators do now, lines of things. That changed, old ships became obsolete and had to be completely retrofit. Some designs no longer had enough room for the thrusters they required to match old performance. These designs were abandoned.

    Yes, your builds will have to change. But you know what? Thats a good thing. Every time you build something, you build it better than you did before. Don't cling to old builds, but be excited at the prospect of getting to build something completely new. New parts mean new design requirements, which means new ways of building your ships that you never considered before. Which means you will come up with new ways of doing it, and new designs that will look more balanced and cohesive because they will have more in common.

    Necessity is the mother of invention, and we'll invent all kinds of new and exciting things!

    In the mean time, keep on building and playing with what we have. There's no telling how long these changes will take, and again the more you build the better you will be. Play the hand you have now instead of worrying about whats coming up in the next deal.

    If you're really that bummed about the idea of your ships being obsolete in 6 months (really, how many of you are still using the same ship you built 6 months ago?), then just work on building replica shells. Make that full sized Enterprise D you always wanted to make. Make a super accurate X-Wing, even if it is 5x the scale of the ones in the movies. Work on your engine porn and your hull detailing. Build stuff to make your ships look awesome that you can apply to anything and everything down the road.

    We're in alpha, the game is going to change drastically all the time. Gotta learn to embrace that change and all the new possibilities that come with it, instead of getting mired down in hanging on to what was. What was isn't as good as what will be, so why fight so hard to hold onto it?

    Starmade has been in development for at least 5 years (according to wikipedia) likely more. While I agree that this is an alpha this game this feels like a huge step backwards from actually finishing this game. I think that most of this issues myself and other players have with the power change is that there isn't a clear explanation of what problems this will solve. Some of the issues schema stated don't feel like issues to many players at all.

    Yes, the game has been in development for 5 years (due to the EXTREMELY small dev team, most of the time consisting of 1 person). Some things become stale and outdated in that timeframe, and its better to acknowledge that what you had no longer cuts it and fix the problem than double down on something that might be a nail in your coffin later on.

    I don't disagree, its better to fix the problem if there is one, but I don't think the proposed system solves their problems, and I think there wasn't a super clear statement of the problems. Many players I think agree on this.

    Being that this change is similar in merit to what I had suggested in the forums, I can't but agree that this is a needed, and welcome, change. I think they could go farther with the conduit system - needing to supply power directly to any shipboard device. I would prefer conduits to take the form of the decorative pipes we have, with elbows and tees, rather than the logic pipes that simply run from point a to point b.

    I learned long ago to avoid building big ships or getting too attached to anything I build. We need a gif meme that states THIS. IS. ALPHA! with the guy from "300" kicking a ship into the hole behind it.

    I am all for change. There are a lot of things I like about starmade but there are MANY areas that could be improved as well. Systems overall I would not mind getting a boost to creativity. I think the real reason people are freaking out is because Starmade has a history of big sweeping changes that do nothing to improve the game. This is a huge shift and if it doesn't work out then Starmade will hugely die off in popularity. This is a make it or break it kind of change.

    To add even more to that the proposal was vague in a variety of ways. It was like they just posted up their brainstorming (probably true) without defining what the new system will do and how it will do it. It seems to me that everyone has a version of this system in their head and is arguing with someone else's interpretation. The discussions are going nowhere because people taking the topics WAY TOO FAR. Lets all calm down first and decide what we want to do as a community before we figure out how we are doing it.

    And this is different from the donut ships we had there for a while... how? The hyper-competitive people had no problem doing a complete 180 in their ship designs before if it gave them a boost, and the game didn't die.

    Essentially, yes.

    Change is going to happen. This game is in alpha, if it isn't this it'll be something else. None of us are allowed to say "Nothing is allowed to change" or "Only things I personally like are allowed to be changed".

    Its happening if our small vocal minority on the boards like it or not, so you can either make noise that does nothing but get you frustrated, or you can get behind it and help steer it in the direction you want it to go.

    I think
    "chamber heat boxes" and
    enforcing a block count < 2/3 "chamber heat box"-volume in these boxes​
    will make prettier and more balanced reactors.

    More balanced because you have a fixed distance for armour casing (no buried reactors)
    better because you have many small heat-boxes instead of one big
    more challenging because you have more heat-boxes to manage.
    We can calm down - a solution is in sight ;)

    Not at all a good way to do it. Companies never do things like this, it just causes chaos. If it was a cool new feature it would have got people hyped up. Now there's so much panic and cross-talk it will be pretty hard to figure out what should be done. I know that the devs have been looking to remake a lot of core systems but you can't just drop this on people when they are expecting new stuff and fixes to old systems. This is like dangling an apple in front of us and then telling us we need to uproot and regrow the tree to get it. I agree that it is necessary but if this rollercoaster continues more and more people are going to go somewhere else.

    Okay, so I'm entirely neutral on the issue at hand, so I'm not going to try and say your wrong or try to enforce the OP's point. That said, I'm gonna harp on something in this response.

    If you can't be bothered to read it all, then don't bother to comment. Seriously, I cannot stand this, and as a journalist I see it every single day.

    It's like the mating call of the ignorant and/or lazy. (Not saying YOU are necessarily either of these, just that those seem to be the common traits embodied by most of those who do this on a regular basis.)

    Btw, the community is happy to change. Everyone has been okay with everything you mentioned because they're an improvement. The weapons update was a fundemental change of mechanics, and most people accepted it as a needed change. We've had 5 years of constant change.

    The difference here is that people don't largely agree it's a needed change. If you're gonna make threads demanding that people welcome a change that you like, get your thumb out of your arse for a second and justify your reasons. Instead of a thread demanding people accept something because you like it, try to change their mind.

    Change is not always good.
