The type 17 science vessel, 'courtana' class. Built in 2481; christened the ' USV Newton'. After 12 years of operation charting the rogue starts in the Milky way-Andromeda void. The ship was unexpectedly attacked by Dreaded craft. Undetectable, even to the Newton's radar. The 'Newton' had no major weapon systems and so sacrificed it's fighters to make a warp out of the void. Unfortunately the ship's L4 compartment had depressurized and ruptured during warp; 12 people were lost to the void. The 'Newton' had the most advanced communication system in the fleet but still took 4 days to get a distress signal out. Admiral Luther Daemon, realizing the importance of the science vessel dispatched the first UDF fleet. He sent a memo which would eventually save his life, to the Cerberian fleet to inform them of the voyage. The UDF arrived just hours before the Dreaded found the 'Newton'. The battle raged for days but the Dreaded had an entire fleet at their disposal and the UDF's main destroyer group was in Jupiter dock for repairs. Fortunately the Cerberus 1st fleet arrived with moments to spare on the 'Newtons' shields and the powerful Ansari class destroyers made short work of the Dreaded. The 'Newton' was tow warped with it's warp drive barely capable of light speed.
The UDF admirals saw no point in the existence of the Newton; decided to scrap it; however the Cerberian admirals saw potential. The 'Newton' had managed to get extensive dark matter research done and this data was used by Cerberus to create powerful rail guns for the new ship. Meanwhile the Type 17 refit was designed to provide a communication facility for the 1st fleet allowing Bridge-Bridge video calls and internet access to the 1st fleet. Fit with activatable blast shielding and a more powerful warp drive; the ship soon gained a reputation for being able to dish out damage from afar and landed it a place in the 'Fearless' battle group.
It's main armament is it's 12 rail gun cannons. The 24 year restoration program brought it to a new christening on the 18th of August 2510, named the 'Altered Destiny' the ship is now an anchor for the first fleet allowing instantaneous communications. The ship went through another refit for minor damage repair in 2516 and was branded the STSV at the end of the refit.
