It's a flying saucer with downward-facing salvage cannons for the abduction beam. There's a cockpit facing that way too to help you salvage.

To salvage something, look at what you want to salvage with the forward-facing camera, then look straight up, and switch to the bottom camera. Don't press z, x, or c while in the bottom camera, the controls will get messed up and you will need to swap to the front camera again and re-orient yourself.
