It's been a long time since I've played this game, even longer since I've actually finished a ship I started, I was disincentivized to play following the complexity of power 2.0 coming out and never bothered to learn reworks until making this. Behold, the culmination of 3 weeks of half productivity half procrastination during my allotted build time per week, there were some other things I was going to add, better automatic sliding doors, crew lodging, and an improved reactor room, but there are a few reasons I didn't add them most of which are comprised of: I just got bored and have other projects I'm working on with sooner due dates
it's been a long time since I've entered a build contest in any voxel game, and now I remember why, it takes a lot more time than I usually have
Contest in question: Community build contest: VIP shuttle/ small yacht
Black Diamond - Luxury Yacht
The ship is designed to show off the owner's wealth, there are plenty of ways to make something look 'premium' based on its colors, commonly either a clean and pure white or a black and gold. The ship features both, a clean white exterior with a black and gold interior offering a powerful juxtaposition between both extremes where neither discounts from the other's statement of wealth, but above all else, nothing quite says "opulence" quite like exotic possessions. Whether it be exotic animals, exotic furniture with the only real purpose for their unusual shape being to advertise that the owner has more money than they know what to do with, or in this case, an exotic hull geometry.
The Black Diamond is Fowler Defense's first production model small luxury yacht. The vessel is designed for short-range excursions, business meetings between high profile clientele, and an exclusive high-society clubbing experience for a select few honored guests at a time. The ship features an active perma-cloaking system and an enhanced FTL Drive, allowing the owner and their guests to conduct their business and celebrations without any disturbance. Fowler Defense does not hold any legal responsibility for any actions taken aboard an independently owned vessel, the vessel is designed for guests 21 years of age and older, storage compartments are not designed for storing illegal contraband as determined by local system laws, and cloaking and FTL systems are not designed to evade authorities.
Effectively serving as a space limousine with all of the amenities of a full club, the Black Diamond vessel is not designed for voyages spanning more than a single working club shift. Due to labor and ship amenity code laws in the system the vessel is manufactured in, the ship must dock to a station or another vessel and exchange crew for the new shift rotation if the vessel is continuing its journey without waiting until the next day's shifts begin. In an emergency, crew have lodging options in the form of a variety of horizontal sleeping surfaces in the main room and escape pod along with a separate bathroom and shower from the club facility.
Exterior:
The ship's exterior fits within a 100x100x100 cube (as defined by the maximum allowed dimensions per the contest rules), but occupies the space in a rather unusual manner, designed to look organic, embodying the essence of an exotic animal, this ship takes the rough figure of an alien space fish, featuring six partially transparent fins, and a 'head' following inspiration from an Oranda (the goldfish with the big heads) and a central body to which all the components are either attached or revolve around which tapers to a point at the bottom of the ship following the general angled profile of the hull while occupying negative space within the build dimensions. The ship features a series of glowing ring structures around it to enhance its 'alien' organic aesthetic while further occupying negative space with structure without deforming the hull profile.
Interior:
The ship's interior features many amenities found in exclusive clubs within legal limits within the manufacturing system. Any modifications that are deemed illegal under Sector 1337 law must be made after purchase at a third party shipyard, doing so is not endorsed by the Fowler Defense Corporation and will immediately void any existing manufacturer warranty.
The interior is largely separated into two portions, the VIP areas, and the crew areas. The VIP areas include the following with the default configuration:
- Two fish tanks, one located by the ship's entry door so the owner can flash their wealth before their guests the instant they step aboard through exotic fish on display, and one located by the escape pod, so even while fleeing imminent destruction of the vessel, the owner can still place their wealth at the center of attention
- 5 private bedrooms with queen size beds designed for 2 people each (more than 2 people and special considerations will have to be made in construction for weight constraints or size modifications) and romantic lighting, a storage unit for 'adult items' and posted reminders about the importance of consent
- A small green space with room for two small trees (included with hull purchase) and a small garden of flowering plants (included with purchase but with no guarantee that they will be in bloom during flights)
- A bathroom featuring:
- - A walk-in shower
- - A sink
- - A 'Golden Throne' toilet so any guest can claim the experience of relieving themselves in a golden toilet bowl (this can be exchanged for up to 2 toilet stalls)
- A main club room featuring:
- - A bar seating 9 with standing room for an additional 9 between the seats at the bar itself
- - A table with luxurious pulsar bovine leather seating for 9
- - A billiard table with 9 included cues spun from carbon-dense Black Igono Wood grown in habitable planets around red dwarfs inlaid with metal weight rings
- - A display shelf (this can be exchanged for a 142" display screen)
- - A main viewport directly to space arcing over the club room, proving whatever is outside the vessel as a display piece
The vessel's club amenities support simultaneous use across the ship by a maximum of 58 people (18 at the bar, 9 at the couches, 9 at pool, 10 in bedrooms, 2 in the bathroom, 10 seated at the theater in the escape pod) before becoming crowded and additional guests begin occupying standing room across the deck. The optimal guest count is between 20-30, any more than that and the escape pod will begin to overcrowd (the escape pod only has luxury seating arrangements for 10 but there is standing room for more if necessary).
The crew areas include the following with the default configuration:
- A bar complete with all the amenities any licensed bartender would look for to accomplish their job (beverages are not included with hull purchase)
- A full restaurant grade kitchen complete with:
- - Sink and dish rack
- - A ~10 square foot flame grill
- - Shelving and cabinets
- - A deep fryer
- - 4 ovens
- - A KitchenSmart™ Series 7 AiO Industrial Food Processor Unit
- - A KitchenSmart™ Series 9 Rehydrator
- - A walk-in refrigerator freezer with 18 frozen storage compartments and ~150 square feet of storage space including shelving units and floor space
- A washing machine and dryer stacked unit
- A separate crew bathroom featuring:
- - A walk-in shower
- - 3 toilet stalls
- - 3 sinks
- CIC featuring 4 seats for the ship's captain, XO, pilot, and comms/sensors operator
- 'Engineering' or Core room accessible via a hallway and elevator to CIC featuring:
- - A protective sliding blast door protecting the core
- - Core access
- - Reactor access
- - Shield access
- - Thruster access
- - AI Pilot access
- - Gravity access
- - Rail speed controller access (although as mentioned earlier I never learned the new systems and uhhh yea I don't know how this works nor do I have the time to learn, but the computer is accessible right from the core room so if you want to configure it to rails go right ahead lol)
Security:
The Black Diamond hull comes with a variety of security features to ensure the safety of the crew, notably it does not have any weapon systems, relying on stealth systems when under threat and a good captain to simply not fly the ship into hostile territory, the Fowler Defense Corporation believes a limousine equipped with a tank cannon will be used as a tank, and this vessel is absolutely not designed to be used in a combat environment and thus does not have components that would incentivize taking any combat actions. The very first layer in the 'defense onion' of "don't be seen by the enemy" is the most powerful asset to a civilian vessel and works best by simply not going into unsafe territories, what the ship does offer though is:
- Universal Docking to allow safe docking access with most vessels, although the unusual hull geometry requires the docking vessel to have either a small profile in the docking orientation, or an extending docking tube I was going to add an extending docking tube that assembles as rings while extending, but, I got bored and had more important things to do lol
- Full power permanent cloaking system
- Accelerated FTL drive
- Shield system providing full regeneration coverage at ~7k HP/s for a maximum of ~376k HP
- Crystal armor instead of glass for the large central viewport
- Sliding armor block protective barrier over core access panel
- Sliding armor block bulkhead blast doors between the ship's interior and vacuum I was going to make these airlocks but, I got bored lol
- Blast door separating CIC from club area to resolve safety concerns regarding intoxicated guests, trip hazards, and CIC access restriction
- Railing surrounding raised platforms to reduce risk of falling
- White tiling for bathrooms and kitchen to prevent potentially hazardous contaminants from going undetected on darker surfaces, allowing a cleaner working space to be maintained preventing contagion
- Blatant reminders of the importance of consent in all bedrooms
- Short range shielded escape pod with extremely high thrust to mass ratio that can additionally be used as a short-range shuttle, featuring comfortable seating for 10 and standing room for up to 30 before overcrowding becomes an issue, the pod is equipped with entertainment in the form of a theater setup
The Black Diamond features all the components of a high-profile exclusive club but with the benefit of mobility, being able to make appearances as contracted, or as a personal, private club for the wealthy and their compatriots.
