I attempted to update SMedit2 the other day and after I time I ended up canceling the update, now when I attempt to open the SMedit_Classic.jar file I get an error window saying

"Error: Could no create Java Virtual Machine.
Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit"

Any idea what this is about and how I could fix it?

Here is the direct link to the files on the lazygamerz.org site.

    http://lazygamerz.org/smedit/SMEdit_Classic.jar
    http://www.lazygamerz.org/smedit/jo_sm.jar
    http://lazygamerz.org/smedit/jo_sm.date
    http://lazygamerz.org/smedit/JoFileMods.jar

the "joFileMods" goes in your "jo_plugins" folder inside starmade and the "jo_sm.jar" and the "jo_sm.date" files go in the main Starmade folder.

Try downloading manually the updated files and see if that helps your situation.

That's it just go to your web broser menu "file" and chose "save as" then chose the location you want to save it to. That would be the starmade folder. save as "jo_sm.date". it might auto put it as that file name, and that's good. Anyways that file technically is just a text document, but it also is the file that defines the last time the application was updated.

Well I got the files into the right places and I ran SMedit again with the same error window. I looked in the Starmade file for the jo_sm.date file and found it as a text document but there was a second one right above it that was ladled as a "date file" and I couldn't open it without choosing a text document program, I deleted that file to see if that made any difference. when I reran SMedit it made a little bit of a change, it gave me the small "would you like to update your SMedit" window and I clicked the "yes" button, after that I got the plain boot window showing me where it was starting from (or at least I think that's what the thing is) but then it gave me the same error message as before and wont start again, it also remade the unopenable "date file" along side the jo_sm.date. no idea what is going on here to be honest.

honestly dude you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. First off the jo_sm.date" file is the file that tells the SMEdit the last time the application was updated. It checks that file to the one on the web that we have and then replaces it with the one on the web.

When you saved the file it didn't save it as "jo_sm.date" it saved it as "jo_sm.date.txt" Then you ran the program again and it again mangled your files that I had you download.

I will tell you again that these are the 3 files that you need I have told you where they go and what they should be called when you get them.

    http://lazygamerz.org/smedit/jo_sm.date
    http://lazygamerz.org/smedit/JoFileMods.jar

before you try running the application again make sure you have replaced these files with the new ones and that they are named what they need to be as well as in the folders they need to be in. Re read what I have posted if you need to that is telling you where the files go.

After you have the new files and only after you have the new files try to run it again.

I have seen this problem with a few other people. It is a not so good file download code in the application. I will do my best to correct this issue as soon as I can.

let me know if you still have problems I do not mind helping.

alright my bad, I attempted to redo it all but I cant save the jo_sm.date file as anything but .txt and it wont let me rename it at all. And I appreciate the help, and I am sorry if I am annoying you at this point.

lol just copy the text from the jo_sm.date and paste it into the one you already have. You can open the one you have as a text doc using notepad.exe and then save it don't chose "save as" just save. The date on the file is what tells the application that it is up to date.

lol you are not annoying me, but we could have had this conversation by pm and not as posts on the topic.

here is the file in a zip for you just copy and pate the date file into the starmade folder

I attempted to open a ship in the current build and all it gave me was the Isanth. Tried for every ship, all it does was give me the default isanth when it finished loading. What am I doing wrong here?

the current build only works with blueprints from older versions of the game that have been moved to the new game blueprint folder. If the blueprints have been made using the new game source. SMEdit will not be able to open or modify them.

The ability to open and modify new blueprints is coming in SMEdit2. This classic version will always only be able to open older blueprints while running on the new game source.

I hope that helped with your issue. To modify new blue prints please be patient the public "Release candidate" versions are do our very soon.

...so... what exactly does this do, then? The old SMEDit worked with old blueprints only, from January 14 or prior game versions. This version you made sounds like it does the exact same thing - it can't load or work with any newer blueprints. No?

This version of SMEDit works with the current version of the game, unlike the previous version.

Anyone can download the older version of the game, though. Old BPs will import into the new game.

I thank all of you for your support to this project. Please do not turn the thread into some sort of debate or flame war over wants and needs. Please take that into account when commenting as we do not need the thread to be a debate when it is only a hot fix offer to keep the application running on new game code.

This hot fix is simply so that players do not have to run 2 versions of the game on their computers to be able to run SMEdit. I am working on a completely new design and added feature version of this code and on this project; as Jo who made the original SMEdit has stopped his development of the project prier to the application being able to handle new blueprints or even new game source.

It is just as simple to make a folder in your main StarMade folder marked "old_blueprints" and just rename the folder to "blueprints" when working with blueprints on SMEdit rather than to run 2 codes of the game. This would allow you to not get confused on old blueprints you have and new blueprints. Also at this time running SMEdit and SMEdit_classic you need an understanding of the the ".josm" file location in your user folders of your computer.

To be honest in later version of the game your not going to want to keep using old blueprints, and in later versions of SMEdit2 it will not work with old blueprints only new blueprints. It would take to much to put in any kind of "if new then this, or if old then this" to the application to make it do both. (for the record schema makes the game convert the blueprint on use.) we wont at this time have that luxury. (maybe in later developments.)

Yes my first objective has been to clean up the code and clean up the abilities of the application, and I have been and am doing this to improve my understanding of what Jo has done to make this application in the first place.

Please do not bother to fuss at me or to complain about the need to have the application work with new blueprints. Believe me when I say that I already completely understand the situation and am working hard to insure that we get to the ability to work with new blueprints; as fast as we can.

I too offer the old last good version Jo made of the SMEdit application to run on old game source. I have it for download if you would rather run that

    http://www.lazygamerz.org/forums/index.php?action=downloads;sa=downfile&id=204

I keep it avalable for those who have problems getting it.

I guarantee that the version now offered as SMEdit_classic, as many can attest to, runs thousands times better do to the improvements I have already made to the application while learning the methods Jo used to make the original.

again I thank you all for your invested interest in the project and its continued ability to offer all it can to its users. I promise to get as much done and as much out there for users to enjoy as fast as I can. I will continue to clean up this application source and the "classic" version will always only be able to handle old blueprints. I am designing SMEdit2 to handle new blueprints.

This is all pretty straight forward. But , it sounds like you might be confusing the hotfix with SMEdit2.

This is simply a hotfix, hence the title. It is what it is (just a hotfix). Same thing as old one (albeit this one runs a lot better), runs on the current version of the game. This just keeps you from having to run multiple versions for StarMade.

SMEdit2 (which is the rewrite in the works) will add the new features and functions like new blueprint stuff.

True but the now "classic" SMEdit isn't just the old one it contains tons of optimizations and improvements that the original never offered, and I will continue to develop and support the classic running on new game source and to work for working with old blue prints. That way the StarmMade players do have the ability to continue working with the old blueprints on new game sources.

may I ask how you allocate more memory to it now that it is Smeidt_classic.jar?
because I can't allocate using the Cmd prompt anymore.
