Whenever I attempt to play locally, the game will eternally stay at the 'Connecting to Universe...' loading screen. This happens regardless of the world, even if I make a new one.

I initially experienced this issue launching from Steam. I moved Starmade into my C:/ directory, and that didn't fix the problem either.

I can still connect to multiplayer.

    from that log
    "
    [2016-06-22 13:35:20] java.lang.NullPointerException
    [2016-06-22 13:35:20] at org.schema.game.common.controller.SegmentController.fromTagStructure(SourceFile:2412)
    "

in the C: location of the game .. delete the file
    C:\StarMade\StarMade\server-database\summer survivin\chatchannels.tag
then try again (i assume it will then hang with the fault at the end of the log file though)
just to eliminate the possibility it is caused by the former game location
start a new world with the install at C:\Starmade
(just choose the local play -> create new option and see if that works then)

    I too have this problem!

I can play just fine on someone else's server, but not locally.

I used to be able to play locally, months ago.

Got this too today. Created a new world. Works perfectly. But cannot get into my "old" world.

    WORK-AROUND:

Then, I wanted to check my logfiles message, so to be sure I got the right ones, I deleted the log.txt.0 and serverlog.txt.0. Then I tried again and it worked! But the game forgot my character, reset my inventory and put me at spawn point. Now I cannot use my things because I'm not a "faction member" anymore.

I was hoping I could use some "admin magic" to go back in my faction, but the faction itself is gone. The ships say something like "unknown faction 10004".

deleting the whole logs folder wouldnt have made a difference at all. has nothing do do with your problem.

we would have needed the log.txt.0 file of one of these failed logins to your singleplayer world to see what was going on.
you did mostlikely lost some important files from your server-database/worldfolder:
corrupted chatchannels.tag is often the cause
    corrupted/lost playerstate_name.tag files
    corrupted/lost factions.fac

make sure the game has full access to its own install path, that your disk inst full or defect and do not terminate the game without ending it properly (if possible)

how can things like this still happen ?
I played this way way before they sold out to steam and never had problem connection, many years later and the game is not even completed and you can play singleplayer lol
