So I know how to make a station, but can you give it power? Shields? etc, I know we can dock turrets to it but I feel a little let down I spent 1 million and I can't really make it neat with beacons, and shields, and stuff....

yes, you can add power and shields etc. to your station. the only thing that would be useless to add are thrusters, since you cant fly a station.
