scanners and asteroids

    Do scanners detect asteroids at a distance? If so, do they tell you what type?

    Unsure, I know that if you're within a certain distance (same sector I believe) you can pick them up on your nav screen, which also tells what type they are.

    This is probably much shorter range than you're wanting.

    The scanner does not tell you about asteroids. Only ships which are currently being piloted by a player.

    Selecting the checkbox "Show Orbital Sectors" while in map mode, will show you which sectors you can find roids in. If your nav settings are correct, once near one of those sectors, you'll see the names of roids and what they contain as well as their mass in your nav window.

    It would be a neat game mechanic if a player in the same sector with an asteroid was not affected by a scan. This would simulate the scanning computer mistaking the target ship as just another asteroid.

    That would be massively exploitable.

    What one calls "exploit", another may call game mechanics enhancement.

    It would make patrolling asteroid belts a necessity and allow for proper games of hide-and-seek.
    Although I agree there should be a chance for the scanner to pick up signatures even between asteroids, inversely proportional to [EDIT: distance and ] proportional to the size and mass of the involved ship, and the capability of the scanner, ie. number of scanner blocks used.
