Matthew walked off into the distance, looking at all the crumbling buildings around him. They looked dead from out here, but he could smell his brethren. It was subtle, but there. He could feel their eyes watching him, but he knew they were more nervous than he was. He hadn't been here in some time, and his return brought somber reminders of whats going on outside of their world. He wrapped up in his cloak, feeling strangely cold.

What is this, he thought to himself, Do I pity her this much? Do I pity them all? He tried to shake it off. Such emotion was not like him, he tried to keep himself. Only Michelle and Mother had ever seen past his skin, but now he felt himself opening up to Sarah and Russie and... He knew with emotion, however, would come insanity. He knew where he was heading. He knew the time was upon him, the children were upon him. But he wondered if he would make it out of this.
Sanity was such a fragile object. The more you tampered with it, the more reactive and unstable it became. You could try to hide it, but it would rot away. You could bring it out into the open, but there it would erode. You constantly had to care for it, and most people could get away with that. But for those like Matthew, the Children, you had no time to care for your sanity. You only had to act, and hope that it held itself together. Matthew had always dreamed and hope maybe by living as he did, he would save the sanity of others. But now, with this new turn of events, he not only worried that he failed to prevent mass insanity, but perhaps failed to even spare his own mind from shattering. And that was something he did not want to happen. He had to care for what little "humanity" he had left.

He wandered off into the distance, heading out towards the dangers of the outer wastes. Maybe, if he wandered out into his past, he could find some answers about his future. The outer wastes were crumbles most people though barren and empty, adventures and travelers knew to be treacherous and filled with malicious creatures, and Matthew knew to be where things long forgotten rest.

They will not fear me out their as they do here, He reminded himself as he trekked across a barren road, Here, the darkness is something you hide from. There, it is where they live. It was a land still under a constant, toxic cloud that blotched out the sun. He took a deep breath, and continued forward.
