The news area in the starmade launcher still shows completely blank/black for me, is this a general bug with the new website or is my launcher screwed up/ outdated?

No, it's blank with this update. I just don't think there's support for it with the website, because its highly likely there making a new launcher.

Since schema did actually make an aditional news post on the old website (after this one went live) i think it was supposed to work, but didn't
