The lost colony of the Outlands Cluster:

Long ago, a large group of intrepid explorers came across a dangerous and volatile area of space known as the outlands. Numerous unstable systems, dead planets falling apart and tearing into everything around them, sun's surging and boiling away everything in their orbits. In the midst of this violent region of space was a small but stable system with a garden world and several planets full of ready-to-exploit resources. Over the coming decades colonists flocked to this Oasis of a planet and started new lives. Agriculture and infrastructure was set up. Mining and fabrication operations were started. A small enterprising family even started their own shipyard. The outlands oasis, as it came known to be, prospered.

    Then it disappeared.

Not only did the planet, the colony, and all of the colonists disappear, so did the entire outlands cluster. Every planet, every star, every rock, comet, even their gravitational pulls were missing.

    200 years passed.

    And they have returned.

They are now a broken people, plagued by attacks from something they call "the dread wing" which ruined their oasis, and destroyed almost everything before they stopped it. All that is left is a small group of families living in their ships, taking what resources they can from the numerous wrecks which surround them. Combined with the threat of piracy from their own, these people have become weary of others, and totally belligerent to outside authorities. They are the ultimate survivors, but also unable to move on from their cultures traumatic past.

These are a few examples of the ships these "Outlanders" are commonly operating. Hardy frames which give no indication of the horrors their operators have lived through.

    Knuckle Head class Longship

This class is used by small families or crews. It was designed as a platform for light cargo hauling, as well as short range defense from pirates in a corvette type role.

These days however, most are seen going from derelict to derelict collecting what they can find, and trading with the nearest station or larger ship.

    Iron Head class frigate

These are rare to see functional. Only the most successful family or organization has been able to kee them running. They are constant targets due to their large cargo hold.

Few attacks on these ships are ever successful. They have extensive firepower for their size, considerable speed, and enough defenses to weather the paltry fire with which they are constantly assaulted.

It may be a good indication as to the state of things, when a suicide run on a lucrative target still offers better odds of survival than leaving it alone...

    Death's Head class battleship

Only a handful of these ever existed, and this particular one has been gutted and is being used as a type of ad-hoc space station.

Slow but powerful, it was a pair of these ships which stopped the dread wing, but not before becoming disabled themselves and disappearing with their attacker. If any were to be recovered, it would undoubtedly be more effective to strip them down for parts and material, than to ever try and make any of them operational again.
