Inconsistent orientation of lamps? Is it normal?

Not sure where to put this, or if it's a bug or not.

Am I supposed to be able to choose the orientation of the items I place? Like the lamp? In some instances, aesthetically, the lamp can be placed in a way that looks bad and I can't switch it's orientation.

If you are in build mode, hold down control and the advanced menu will come up on the right. It has an option to change the orientation.

You can hold down Control and use the scroll wheel too, if that's more comfortable.

That is.. amazing. Imagine if these things were easier to learn in-game... Like.. tooltips for each block that explain what each block does without having to go to the SHOP menu to look at them.
