If you post a screenshot of what you made, I can give some specific suggestions.

More generally, use details like ribs and armor plates to break up blockyness, and throw in some color.

    Hmmm......
I would start by adding wedges, which helps a lot. You may also want to make it longer, it looks a bit stumpy right now. Try making covering up your thrusters with hull, then putting a hollow tube 2 blocks long on the back, and putting ice crystals or lava in it, to make it look like engine glow. some wings would help to. I would get rid of the cannons, as there is no way that thing is ever going to stand up to an isanth, so you may as well run unarmed. Putting salvage modules in an array with multiple outputs is better than a single more powerful beam. I would suggest playing around in creative to learn some shipbuilding.

You also want a better power setup. Put the power modules in long lines.

Well I am not that artistic but for that size it is hard to really show details.
As the ships get larger it is easier to draw out more detail because than blocks become more pixel like.
Some so called "builders" actually use voxel software that translates 3d models/images to voxels (blocks) so that is how some do their 1:1 "art"

    Like pixel artwork.
With pixel artwork you draw dot by dot (block by block) than when you enlarge it ... you get a illusion of something more than what it is.

Also remember asymmetric designs can give something interesting to look at for the eye.
