The HUD radar 'map' needs a directional indicator badly, galactic center would seem to be the logical orientation point. A fixed dot on the radar spheres edge would suffice so you know which way is 'North' at a glance.
A level indicator would also be of great use so you know which way is 'up' also at a glance. Having the top half of the sphere a different colour to the bottom would be enough. At the moment trying to orientate yourself in any particular direction and get yourself the right way up is more difficult then it should be.

Aye we need a navigator, captain ;)

If you project 3D onto a 2D screen, you need to extrude 1D from the point which indicates the target's position.
    3D: D+D+D = x+y+z
    2D: (D+0)+(D+D) = ({cos dx} +0) + ({sin dy}+dz) –– xy coordinates with you in the centre and a line from the target's position in/out-ward.
