Simple, do you become a Tester with an application or when you become when you have reported lot's of bugs?
The entire post pretty much sums it all up, but this particular point probably is the most important one. If you manage to make a bunch of very good reports you will get our attention.And being able to communicate clearly all the details of an issue.

In the 'helpful' department if we see you active most in the bug sections not just posting but confirming as well then we take notice and you might get a special invite. The red pill shows you the real world, the blue pill lets you continue thinking everything is awesome. The yellow one is an M&M. AndyP gives you one a day for being a good listener*.
You do have to show some aptitude and skill. A little initiative. An ability to work with others. And being able to communicate clearly all the details of an issue.
