According to this logic ice crystal isn't in the same group as the new crystals either. The new ones are crafting resources while ice crystal is terrain / decorational.

Having an effect module that increased range in exchange for more power consumption would definatly be a welcome addition, but it should be added as a new module rather than replacing the overdrive.

Box dimension is just another way of saying it works by the largest bounding box, meaning a box that would fit your entire thing inside. So the most efficient way is to just make single lines along each of the three axis. That's connected blocks so that diagram of yours wouldn't work very well...
