There was an idea a while ago to allow undeathinators on ships so that fighter pilots could simply respawn in the fighter bay and get in another fighter. Sounds like a good way to let people have fun in fighters while still letting them stay in a longterm battle.
Make ship in blender, export as .obj file then load it in most recent version of SMEdit which will then ask you what you want your ships longst dimension to be. As long as you leave it as hull then it works with the current version of starmade just fine.

Quantity is used verses quality when the quality units have a low fire-rate. That way it becomes a tactical advantage because by lowering the value of targets you lower the value of each of the opponents limited shots and overwhelm them faster than they can kill you.
