I think lasers should not be close range weapons
The base range should be increased to the sector range (like cannons) or above
The base reload should be set to 2s
The base weapon would fire a single shot (a kind of small flash)

Yes It would be quite easy, just weapons linked in chain with a delay in between. With the current SLOWNESS to reload we have with a great number of weapons combo, it's a shame we can not already.

I think this could be a good way to use the power of this weapon despite the very small range, on planet or stations targets at least.
By using effect like EMP or ION we would be able to have some variants.

If done nicely, I think this will greatly increase the amount of fun we have dealing with the pirates. And nerf big ships, let me explain: I usually let the pirate with an Isanth ship or one of my own fighter-sized ship. So if a wave of 3 of them attack me I have big chances to fail and get shot...

If this weapon system (I mean the current dps per wpnblock balance) remained this way the building mecanics will make the players keep their builds minimalist except if they are so fat you don't even mind sparing some mass and space.
It's very sad. I would prefer if the ship's behavior just work...

Another thing about the sniper combo is the burst time on beamsniper combo is so low the DPS seems to drop compared to standard beam
