Seems like your texture files are corrupted... This can be remedied by copying the texture files from a fresh install into the corrupted one... Copy the textures folder from the data folder in a fresh install to the orrupted install, and overwrite exiting files...

I think that's just another side effect of transparent blocks, others being other transparent blocks disappearing from view when viewed through other transparent blocks etc. That said, it probably affects all connectable blocks.
