If you want to farm pirates, try just sitting in a base with a station and occasionally hitting enough to down the shields. Then pirates will spawn about a sector away for you to kill.

You can set up filters in storage blocks, and use logic blocks linked to them to turn them on and off. Setting the filter rate (how much is pulled per storage tick, which is half the rate of factory ticks) is another part of that.
Here's the thing about building a weapon like a little ship: You wind up having to put a shell around the weapon itself, so it's hard to get a slim weapon. So I'd say that the functionality of the weapon is seperate from the shape of the weapon (what people actually see)
If you spawn them from inside the core they're a lot closer to the ship. Tab+f8 also help if you have admin.
However, this is still a very good feature, and should be implemented.
I actually found heatseekers are really good for taking out the turrets on the station too. And considering that they (in vanilla) have an 8km range, it's pretty easy to remove the turrets from afar.
