they could also add an option to the build area sliders (like remove mode) that will only build on the side of a wall that the first block is placed.
EDIT: this is not a way of replacing this idea just a second way of using the underlying concepts.
if i remember correctly it was decided that it wasn't feasible as the process of mapping the area to b filled and determining if it was actually close would take to much processing power and make lots of lag
the main advantage is the galaxy map overlay and the scanning of ships that are not occupied. i admit this could be achieved with out this but i thought it would be better to add some believable reason for this to happen.

due to the way designs are stored in pieces on the server hard drive the server i play on has limited the size of ships built/repaired with shipyards to the size of one file (a small shuttle at best).
just going to put this out there that some servers dont allow or limit the size of shipyards due to bugs so on those servers this would be great for repairing. the only alternative on those servers for repairing critically damaged ships is using bps to deconstruct and respawn the ship
ok thanks now i get it. i have tried filling in a very rounded ship but not in a long time and i had forgotten. this is y i think they should add an area fill option.
