I really like using circuits and/or motherboards to give flat surfaces a more textured feel. That, and the top end of conduit blocks. Similar to grey advanced armor, but different enough to be used for some nice variation in surfaces.

I've noticed a similar thing happening when slab blocks are placed next to equal-sized slab doors. I'd imagine it's just some bug with how certain elements in the game are rendered.

Maybe a wave group could be decided by a mass/size quota. Have X total mass allocated for one wave, and the masses of the individual ships added up can't exceed that number (that way, multiple large ships with masses in the 10,ooos don't appear in groups).

One thing I always have to tell myself when adding hull details is, "don't give yourself any pointless rules."
