I chose other, to me Starmade is ideally a casual game where I get to float throug the void between galaxies on board a city ship filled with places that defy reason... somehow I ended up miticulously designing hyper efficient death machines instead.
Figured I'd just submit a normal application now that I know the people I like are here

Just comming up to defend plain old cannon. Its about as viable as cannon/pulse or perhaps even cannon/cannon. Its really the go-to gun for any ship/turret that needs a relatively fast weapon but is too small to mount a worthwhile cannon/cannon.
I think that stopped working recently, regular rail docked barrels got their field of fire greatly reduced compared to turrets so now they don't fire most of the time.
Putting everything on forward and turning can be quite good for small fighters, lots of speed and agility if you don't strafe much. Strangely this is also a good setup on titans because one of those thing is never going to strafe anyway.
Oh I thought from your last comment you meant do away with the pickup rails altogether and just have it dock the same way players eventualy would. Yeh that would work but in the meantime it would just be jarring because it would make the 'snap' more noticable when they dock,
Well theoretically the game will get more and more immersive and this being the case we don't want ships teleporting onto docks to ruin that. At some point even manual docking beams are intended to cause the ship to begin to automatically move onto the dock rather than just snapping straight on.
The pickup point stuff is there because coding a path finding ai for drones to be able to redock to any ship configuration would be up there with the ai MIT uses for their bipedal robots. Its much easier just to let the player handle the path finding.
You are correct that ion reduces physical damage, removing it completely at 100%
How much you want to reduce your ion by depends on what blocks you want to kill and how much damage the beam does per tick.
