I'd try avoiding even bothering to turn to shoot at something, trying a multi-directional weapons system would be a good way to avoid being in a cloud of death.

What the devs need to do is combine BPs and Designs into a single thing and just split it internally if they really have to.

If they are going to replace BPs they are going to need to replace them with something we can still upload and download to and from servers as well as the content section. >.> They likely disabled it for other reasons.

It's possible to do but you would still need to check if a change has occurred but that isn't as bad an issue.

That's what another topic is for. :P In any event yep maybe they are too busy to the point of forgetting about it or are leaving it for some date when they can make use of it. Never hurts to poke them every now and than to make sure the lights are on and they are having it in mind. :P

Why not send the code to the devs or post it up in a suggestions thread? Might give them ideas. :)

The other downside to wireless is they tend to disconnect themselves from time to time. Also as you mentioned ships not currently connected. There's a way to solve the issue but it takes both ships having the correct logic on them for it to work and is really dependent on what you are up to...

Use the wireless method, as annoying as it is it's the best route unless someone else has a better idea. Using the ship's activation beam might not work in the future so don't count on it for everything.

Basically an idiot repelling one could be as cheap as possible but as dangerous for the cost as possible. That said a good one as you said could be good for taking hits and dishing them out.
